My Kids Are Going Back to School

The kids are back in school — well, they’re actually home right now. With two of their friends. We’ve had unscheduled half-days for the last two days.

Yup, we got a text to check our email yesterday when I got back from dropping them off. They let us know that because of the heat school would only be half-day for Wednesday and Thursday. Friday they’re off. Monday was a half day.

So the first full week of school has been 1 full day and 3 half days.

Teacher assignments were mailed out when we were out of town. Our first grader’s teacher couldn’t come to back-to-school night so she didn’t get to meet her before school started.

Pick up has been a mess because the buses are running late. We walk to school so that usually means me standing around in the sun for 30 minutes. I don’t want to be late because I know that if I’m even one second late I will not hear the end of it.

The first day of school my first grader wouldn’t walk home with me because she wanted to walk home alone.

This year (and last year) were not normal school years. But every year there’s something. Last year I got yelled at by a crossing guard for not crossing the parking lot in the right spot. Then I got talked to by a teacher and emailed about it.

It sounds so ridiculous when I type that now, but I was upset about it. I was ashamed that I had done something that got that kind of response.

This year, I am not taking it so personally. There will be fails. I will get things wrong. It’s not a problem. I’ll show my kids that it doesn’t matter if we make mistakes and get things wrong. That’s how we learn anyway.
